On Monday, May 9th, Lady Burrs Star Akyra Murray '16 signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Mercyhurst College on a full athletic scholarship!
Scoring over 1,000 points and gaining multiple All-Catholic Honors, Akyra Murray has accomplished more than she ever thought possible during her high school athletic career. Murray was first introduced to basketball in 
the ninth grade and despite receiving discouraging messages from teammates and spectators, Murray stayed focused on her steady development.
Under the weight of constant criticism, Murray contemplated hanging up her jersey toward the end of freshman year. Fortunately, Akyra was able to find a new sense of hunger and commitment to achieving her dream of playing basketball at the collegiate level. Murray began working out on a daily basis, further dedicating herself to proving her critics wrong and earning a college athletic scholarship to Mercyhurst University.
Akyra transferred to West Catholic Prep at the beginning of her junior year and utilized the inspirational but challenging style of the West Catholic Prep Girls’ basketball coaching staff to intensify her dedication. With college on the horizon, Murray is relying on self-motivation and her development leadership skills now more than ever to help her continue the journey that was once only a dream.
